You and I have had a different Turkish experience. In 1970 I entered Turkey via parachute into Thrace, along with team members, completed my mission and then had to exfil, I ripped the inseam of my jeans on landing and if my schlong were any larger it would have been exposed.
We traveled by bus to Istanbul, picked up bottles of wine along the way. The stuff was not palatable it came in bottles recycled since Constantinople, and smelled like kerosene and tasted, abominable.
We arrived at the port of Constantinople, and tried to catch a ride on American flag carrier freighters to no avail, but were told to try the airport.
At the airport we made contact with the Turkish AF liason officer,in his own shack. He had a batman that was shining his shoes, poor dude was wearing a wool uniform that looked like it had been recycled from the Korean war.
He was able to contact the US Air Force and they sent a C-130 from Incirlik Air Base, and we spent two days house or rather hidden behind cargo in a warehouse, because none of us had any passport, much less visa,and were all dressed in civies, with our M-16's broken down and stowed in civilian backpacks.
We never got to enjoy the bazaars or riviera, but one thing I did notice is that the people, especially up on the northern part of Turkey, walked around looking like he living dead., slow moving and lethargic, men were all dressed in old dirty woolen clothes

A lot can change in 38 years, including the politics. In 1970 Turkey was a liberal secular democracy, Today it is an Islamist autocracy.
Also life in the hinterlands is very different than life in the city or tourist destinations, just as in America.
