Gay pride spun off from a parade that took place in NY a year after the Stonewall Riots, which resulted in changes in NY law and policing.
Stonewall was a gay bar in Greenwhich Village. The cops use to get their orgasm by raiding the bar, beating up the patrons, mostly the DRAG queens, but it was worse on that night in Jun in 1969.
That resulted in a riot, and a change in policing and the law. A year later there was a riot to celebrated the event, and it has become a tradition.
